Magnesium is probably the greatest predictor of all aspects relating to heart disease and anti-aging. A very high number of us are deficient in this mineral involved in virtually every metabolic process taking place in our bodies. However, not every “charley horse” is a result of a magnesium deficiency. It is just as likely that muscle cramps can actually be tissue calcium starvation. Incidentally, taking more magnesium pushes out the calcium. The two minerals are antagonistic. The natural state of our mind is to be at peace yet the tension one feels when it is not is a direct result of the discomfort created by the busyness of modern living. It is fact that our memory and creativity is at its best when in a relaxed state. Our minds are more capable of processing ideas and we are generally more in control when our body’s are at peace. It is the nature of sleep, of true happiness and needed for healing. Being in a relaxed state allows you to put your life into the perspective of a whole - of a world in which you are a part of where all is interconnected. Energy can be thought of as contagious in the way that it transfers easily from one person to the next. Just pay attention to someone that passes you in an oncoming vehicle. Without coming into contact with them, you sense their vibe. It is just a flash of a moment and yet it can impact you, if you are not consciously monitoring your vibration; you’ve heard the phrase “it rubs off on you”.... Through breath we can bring energy into our body. This is an ancient understanding forgotten all to often. Imagine as you inhale that you are gathering life supporting energy and that with every breath it purifies all of your body, mind and soul. There is no part of your being that this life force energy cannot reach and inhabit. It is purifying, healing and life-giving. Everything that you do not want is purged with each breath; the stress, the tension, anger and fear. This is a very effective process but requires a heightened sense of awareness of your breathing. Despite your years on this earth, you haven’t likely mastered this most basic function of life.

My grandmother “Oma” is 89 years of age, is in great health, and has the aspiration to reach 100! I have shared with Oma some ways to obtain that impressive goal; cut down on gluten and avoid the vegetables that contain a chemical that can exacerbate inflammation. Recently, I checked in with Oma. She proudly reported that she avoids bread altogether and is staying away from those “moon vegetables”. She is adorable! Of course, she is referring to “nightshade” vegetables – those that contain solanine.
Solanine is a natural chemical found in nightshade plants/vegetables and some herbs. Most people can tolerate this chemical but many bodies that are in stress cannot, and the reactions manifests itself as an inflammatory response such as body aches, joint pain, and asthma.
How do you know when you need to avoid nightshades? If you have chronic inflammatory or degenerative conditions it can turn around debilitating pain to completely eliminate nightshades from your diet. These include tomatoes, potatoes and all pepper except black pepper. There are more and this diet plan only works if you are strictly avoiding everything that contains this chemical that you may be sensitive to. I can provide, upon request, a comprehensive list and wallet card listing all the foods and spices you need to avoid. The wallet card can be shown to restaurant chefs making it easier to adhere to the diet.
When it comes to weight loss counting calories may be a thing of the past, as a tried and failed attempt, an obsession, or somewhere in between…. Whatever the case, I want to make you aware of a couple pearls that may awaken a new drive to excel and beat the un-welcome weight once and for all.
Multiply your ideal weight in pounds (the number of pounds in which you’d like to weigh) by 10. This number calculated is the max amount of calories you will want to consume in a day if you are trying to lose weight. There are Apps to help keep track of your caloric intake. Online BMI (Body Mass Index) calculators can help you determine your percentage if body fat. It cannot take into account muscle mass, bone density etc. I do not recommend this tool to be used by anyone but the obvious out-of-shape and over-weight. For example, a weightlifter with more muscle mass may be overweight according to the BMI formula. Body Fat Percentage is the amount of body fat you store. If you know your body fat percentage the calculator will use the Katch-McArdle formula. BMI is simply your weight in (kilograms) divided by your height in meters squared.
You are underweight if your BMI is less than 18.5
you are in normal range if it is between 18.5 to 24.9, and
Overweight if your BMI is between 25 to 29.9 and
Obese if it is over 30.
One pound of body fat has 3,500 calories. This means in order to lose 1 pound of body fat in any given week, you need a deficit of 3500 caloric intake per week which comes out to be 500 calories/day. I think this is on the conservative side. However, paired with exercise and sauna-ing, it is reasonable.
All this aside, I find it easier to follow the Vital Diet Plan I’ve constructed in combination of the oldest form of research we have on blood chemistry and foods, the Blood Type Diet, ancient eastern wisdom and todays findings on healthy diets. It is the simplest way to compute all the information and weed out mis-conceptions. What would it take to have a healthy glow from the inside-out that defies chronological aging? Start with digestive health. See the resource page HERE for starts! There are very specific enzyme formulas to address particular conditions. For instance, a craving for cold liquids or foods and/or a history of asthma or bronchitis indicates one set of enzyme deficiency verses symptoms of abdominal cramps after eating or undigested food visible in stools that are signs of another set of enzyme deficiency.

The awareness of epigenetics is on the rise, even in the allopathic medical model. Dr Mercola talks about the human “being of energy, and as such, you have an electromagnetic component to every biological process. Every thought or feeling produces a complex shift in the biochemical make-up of your organs”. Also in Dr Mercola’s article, he refers to, Blair Justice, PhD, author of Who Gets Sick, stating how genes account for only 35 percent of longevity (and I would add the state of health). This leaves the remaining 65% to diet, exercise, stress management and other environmental factors the main player in well-being. This is encouraging due to it being in our hands and responsibility to choose wisely the things we do have control over. Stress management, nourishment and products (skin care for example) being the top three I see having the most impact. “The biofield is the term medical science has adopted for the intricately layered vibrational energy field that is said to surround and penetrate the physical body. For thousands of years, traditional, indigenous, pre-scientific medical systems have recognized a balanced, evenly pulsing biofield as the foundation of health and well-being”. If this balance is disrupted, it may cause illness of some sort. The adrenal glands are evolved in many aspects of health. When the adrenals are insufficiently functioning (hypoadrenia) they do not produce and regulate sufficient amounts of hormones. This is often referred to as “burnout”, “adrenal exhaustion or fatigue”.
There are many repercussions of adrenal fatigue such as hormonal imbalances, kidney dysfunction, and decreased immunity. However possibly the most common cause of adrenal fatigue (a wide spread problem) is modernized living. Face it; life is complicated packed full with deadlines, appointments, and every day stress and irregular eating habits. I have witnessed even the smallest of children suffer the effects of adrenal fatigue. Even babies can be predisposed to this devastating dysfunction due to the mother’s status during pregnancy. Always have water with you! A good quality source of water to keep hydrated, I find that when with me, I drink it! You can't go wrong there!
Spring can inspire us to be out and about more which also brings the challenge around eating. Choosing quality over quantity is valuable and wise, being over eating is a cause of disease! In the roughly 6 minute video above I mention some of the tricks I use to be prepared. Here are some more:
A quick bite to satisfy the need for fuel can include the following:
*A whole food meal replacement bar and green food (drink or capsules)
*A smoothie made with a quality protein and organic whole foods
*A probiotic drink and fiber including a supplement or in the form of raw veggies
As for fats – it’s all about balance
here is the ideal proportion (per day):
1 T polyunsaturated fat (flax, black currant seed oil, evening primrose, borage, cod liver oil)
4T mono-unsaturated fat as in olive, Sesame seed oil, avocado, nuts and seeds as well as lard
6T Saturated fat in the form or butter and coconut oils. Butter everything and cook with coconut. Saturated fats include fats attached to beef or lamb and dairy products such as buttermilk and yogurt.

Balancing and integrating our mind, body and spirit is the work of the group healing 5 week course called the Immersion Program. The sensations meditaion is to keep (for enrollees – click here if interested, its not too late!) and listen to as much as you’d like (found in the PowerPoint). We discussed techniques to ground and why it is so important! We touched on the stress response and what can activate the parasympathetic system to induce “happy hormones” in order to come out of the physiological effects of stress/trauma. There was so much packed into this session which we will review next week.

On this timeline, you record a snapshot of your health history including events that may have altered your state of health, your past and present health practices, any health challenges you may have encountered, and the health of your family; all items that make up your physical life story.
Paying attention to your health is paramount. It comes before everything. Because, if you don’t have your health, nothing else matters.
Why do you need a health timeline? Taking the time to create a Health History Timeline has many benefits:
